A New Dawn for Reena: A Story of Light and Hope from Jaunpur
In the quiet hills of Jaunpur block in Tehri Garhwal, lived a woman named Reena — spirited, strong, and full of dreams, but for the longest time, locked in darkness.
For over three years, Reena had been completely blind in both eyes. What started as a fading blur soon turned into total blindness. The simple joys of life — cooking, walking to the temple, — became distant memories. She had to rely heavily on her family members even for her most basic daily needs.
“I felt like a burden,” Reena recalls. “I couldn’t even make a cup of tea on my own.”
But one day, hope arrived.
As part of its outreach mission, Nirmal Ashram Eye Institute (NEI) organized a free eye screening camp in Reena’s village. Her family brought her there with cautious hope. She was screened, diagnosed with mature cataract in both eyes, and immediately registered for surgery — free of cost.
Within days, Reena was taken to the Nirmal Ashram Eye Institute, located near Rishikesh. The care she received was compassionate, respectful, and professional. After a successful cataract surgery, something miraculous happened — Reena could see again.
“I saw my mother’s face after three years,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “And I saw the mountains again — my mountains.”
Life has changed for Reena — completely. From being dependent, she is now contributing again to her family’s household work. She prepares meals, fetches water, walks to the local market — all on her own.
Her confidence is back. Her dignity is restored.
