The World Health Organizations (WHO) has revealed that as many as 285 million people worldwide are estimated to be visually impaired, of which, 39 million are blind and 246 million have low vision. WHO further adds that about 90% of the world’s visually impaired live in low-income settings and as many as 82% of people living with blindness are aged 50 years and above. Globally, the major causes of moderate to severe visual impairment are uncorrected refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism) at 43%. Following closely, unoperated cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness, especially so in middle and low-income countries, at 33% (World Health Organization, 2014)

In India, it is estimated that as many as 8.8 million people are blind and another 47.7 million people suffer with moderate to severe visual impairment (Mascarenhas, 2017).

Despite the bleak picture presented above, it is heartening to note that as many as 80% of all visual impairment cases can be prevented or cured. It is based on this realization that the Nirmal Ashram Eye Institute was established at Rishikesh in 2005.

Since inception, NEI has been working unrelentingly to transform patients’ lives by providing the best possible ophthalmic interventions to them.
